Should I make my own wedding bouquet?

I am playing with the idea that I am going to make my own wedding bouquet. The idea is terrifying. I am a DIY-girl. I know exactly how I want things to look like, but that also means a lot of work on my part. I am not scared of hard work. However, I am scared that I am going to run out of time and be so stressed out at my wedding that I am not able to enjoy it. On the other hand, being annoyed that the bouquet wasn't what you dreamt of might not be that much better.

Right now, I still have tie to think about it and decide later. For now, I'm going to try to teach myself how to create the bouquet. That way I actually have a real choice when it's time to decide.

I am not quite sure what kind of bouquet I would like. I like the simplicity of the rose bouquet. It's clean and elegant. Therefore, learning how to create a bouquet like this will be my first goal.

One year to go

When it was more than a year to go until the big day, I tried to slow down all the weeding preparations. However, the wedding is now less than a year away. I am very excited, but also a bit scared. Calm down, it's not cold feet. It is just that I feel that this is a big event. It should be a bit scary. Fortunately, I think I'm only scared of the wedding, and not so much the marriage.

Next week I am going to London to look at some wedding dresses. I am not going to buy the dress, but I am going to look at different designers and try to figure out what kind of style I prefer. I think I know what I am looking for, but I know that what you love in a picture, you might not love in person. I can't wait to go exploring!

Lily of the valley

Lily of the valley is a sweet flower with characteristic leaves. With its small bells, and eye-catching leaves, this flower is a wonderful addition to any bouquet. After its bloom, the small bells will turn into red berries. Both the flowers and berries are poisonous, especially for animals and small children. The latin name of lily of the valley is Convallaria.

This flower blooms in the beginning of summer. In Norway, it usually blooms in May/June. The flower is perennial and can be found in the forest. Lily of the valley is also a common garden flower, and if you know in advance that you want this flower for decorations, you should add it to your garden.

This flower is perfect for a DIY wedding bouquet, since you can easily grow it yourself. Lily of the valley is very popular in wedding bouquets. Famous brides that have had this flower in their bouquet are Duchess Catherine of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) and PrincessGrace of Monaco.

Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are beautiful full flowers that look fantastic in vases and bouquets without a lot of fuss. When you cut the stem, you get a large flower that often looks stunning by itself. The latin name of the flower is hydrangea, but it is also often known as hortensia.

Although this flower originally comes from southern and eastern Asia, it can now be found in most gardening centres and has become a popular feature in many gardens. I know I truly enjoy my hydrangeas, and have them both planted in my garden and in flower pots on my patio.

Hydrangeas come in different colours. Most species of the hydrangea are white, but some species change colour based on the soil acidity. If you buy a blue hydrangea, it could become pink, or vice versa due to the acidity in the soil where you planted it. In soil with pH lower than 6, the flowers tend to be blue, but in soil with pH higher than 6, the flowers tend to be pink. Therefore, if you are planning to plant hydrangeas in your garden, and are particular about the colour, you ought to check the pH level in the soil.

If you are planning to use hydrangeas in flower decorations, I would advise you to buy pots of hydrangeas and enjoy them until you need to cut of the flowers and use them in your decorations. You can read more about using hydrangeas in wedding decorations on this websites dedicated to hydrangeas.

Baby's breath

A flower you constantly see in bouquets is baby's breath. This is a plant with lots of white flowers.
The latin name for the plant is gypsophila. There are several species of this plant, but the one that is often used in floral arrangements is called gypsophilla paniculata.

It is very common to use this plant alongside other flowers, but it can be very nice by itself as well. The thin branches and small flowers creates a delicate effect that suits weddings. If you like this plant, and are looking for ways to use it, you can have a look at the slideshow at Elizabeth Anne Designs. This slideshows you 15 different ways to use Baby's breath.

If you are doing the flowers yourself, it is possible to grow your own baby's breath. It is a nice, perennial flower to have in your garden. It is a typical summer flower. In Norway it is in bloom from June until August. If this something you wish to do, you can read more about how to grow your own baby's breath you can read more about it on the website of The National Gardening Association.

Run, run, run ...

Once we got engaged, I decided that I didn't want to seem to eager to get married. Therefore, I waited a week and a half before I started planning the wedding. This might not seem like much, but for a planner and a control freak like me, this was exhausting. My mind kept on racing, thinking about ideas, but I managed to keep my mouth shut.

Well, that isn't completely true. Just after the proposal, I asked when we would get married and we immediately agreed on a month and a year.  However, our "month" was only 14 months away. My fiance thought we had lots of time, but I knew that many people start planning their big day years in advance. After calling around to find a church and a venue for the reception, I got the feeling that I was in a race against all the other brides. Have you ever gotten that feeling? Every time someone told me that they were booked, I felt like I was falling behind. However, after sending dousins of e-mails, we found a venue we love. Although we have booked a Church and a venue noe, I still feel like I'm in a race.

OMG! I am engaged!

So, it finally happened. During a holiday, my boyfriend of 4,5 years proposed to me. I haven’t been waiting for it THAT long. However, once we had been together for 3 years I must admit I started wondering whether he would ever ask me to marry him. I never thought it was that important to me, but suddenly one day, I really cared. Marriage, or no marriage, I have never doubted that he loves me. However, I do care that we can finally start planning our weeding. I say “we”, but usually it’s me who care about the tiny details. Nonetheless he listens to me talking about these details for days. He gets credit for that.

Anyway! I have started this blog, to write about some of the thoughts I have about the wedding. Maybe I will throw in a couple of thoughts about marriage as well. Who knows? A wedding is one day, a marriage is for life. I’m not sure anyone will be reading this blog, but if by any chance you are reading this right now, I am very happy. Thanks for reading. I hope you will enjoy my blog.
